How did you
become a designer?
From as early as I can remember, I loved to draw
and create art. I started out in architecture
school thinking that being an architect was what
I wanted to do. After one year of that, I knew
it was not the kind of drawing and creating I
wanted to do so I switched to graphic design and
loved going to classes. During my 5 1/2 years
at Kansas State University, I worked as a paste-up
artist long before the company had Macs. I then
realized that graphic design was what I loved
doing and figured out how to make money doing
it. In 1996, I moved to St. Louis with my wife
Julie and began freelancing out of my house. In
1999, I started doing business as Studio 2108.
In 2007, I moved into an office space and hired
my first employee to help with the increased workload
and to expand the business. Where
are you from originally?
I grew up in Northeast Kansas – and we moved
around a lot due to my dad being transferred every
three or so years with Southwestern Bell Telephone.
In 1989, I met my wife (Julie who is from St.
Louis) during college at Kansas State University.
We lived in Kansas City and I worked as an Art
Director for Legends Athletic where I met and
worked for the current owners of TAG Team Uniforms.
In 1996, I moved to St. Louis and left Legends
Athletic on good terms, giving a few months' notice.
I ended up freelancing for them when the VP of
Marketing moved to St. Louis, and started working
at Rawlings Sporting Goods a few years later.
Who were your main influences growing
up?
My parents. They encouraged me to keep drawing
as they could see I was better than most kids
of my age and realized I really liked it.
Did you go to art school/college
or are you self-taught?
I attended Kansas State University and graduated
in 1992 with a BFA in Graphic Design and Illustration.
Any advice or tips to novice designers?
Get an internship as early as possible. Get the
exposure and experience to see what kind of firm
is right for you. Always leave on good terms with
anyone you do business with or work for as you
may find yourself in an opportunity to do business
together afterwards. What has
been the most rewarding and challenging project
you have worked on?
A Web site for another creative promotion company
was the most challenging but rewarding, as the
final product has turned out to be a great site.
What is your favorite portfolio piece?
Why?
Designing and developing the TAG logo & "Circle
T" icon. I redesigned the branding (logo
& icon) for my client six years ago. Since
then, the logo and icon has shown up on hundreds
of thousands of athletic equipment and custom
athletic uniforms all across the United States
and in Canada. Every time I see a picture of the
product in a newspaper or even Sports Illustrated
I tell myself – there's my logo again.
What American art or artist inspires
you most?
Not just one artist can be identified –
as I am always looking at any and all art that
I see. |
