Interview

How did you become a photographer?
While talking to a friend, we decided to do something totally different to what we studied at the university. We went back to school and studied photography. A couple of years later, I quit IBM to become a photographer.

Where are you from originally?
I was born in Antwerp, Belgium. But I grew up in Mexico City and now based in Austin, Texas.

Who were your main influences growing up?
My mother, education, friends and listening to music.

Did you go to art school/college or are you self-taught?
I got a degree in Computer Systems from the Universidad Iberoamericana. After working for IBM, I went back to school to study photography at the Escuela Activa de Fotografia.

Any advice or tips to novice photographers?
Be yourself.

What has been the most rewarding and challenging project you have worked on?
My own book Mientras vagaba por el D.F./While Wandering Through El Deh Effeh. After more than five years, I came back to Mexico City – I decided to do a book in the shape of a pedestrian journey using my toy camera.

What is your favorite portfolio piece? Why?
I may not have a favorite one, but I'm always attracted to my latest pieces. So far, I have an attraction to Elephant's Path. I still need to develop my most recent work and I'm sure I'll have a new favorite. But technically speaking "Clean Break" is my favorite – it appears to be taken with a top of the line camera.

What American art or artist inspires you most?
Keith Carter. Additionally, Richard Avedon and Annie Leibovitz.

  Elephant's Path

While being on a temple, I started to think about my life. After some time, I realized I was staring at a column with a shape of an elephant's leg. I decided to take a photo in order to remember that special moment of my life...and then a monk appeared.

  Clean Break

Taken at the forbidden city in Beijing, China. Imagine being a broom and working all day – wouldn't it be the perfect place to be?

Technically speaking it's my favorite print.

  Abandoning Ania

My daughter "Ania" was born and I decided to do a series about her. I would place her in her baby seat on unusual sites as if she was abandoned. This is the only one I took with my plastic camera.

Chairs

While watching a photo exhibit in Amsterdam, I wanted to find a place in order to change the film of my camera. When I turned around I found this place...I needed to remember it.

  La Rumorosa

One of the must dangerous roads in Mexico – it's called La Rumorosa. While taking photos some guys were stealing parts of the damaged cars. They started to scream because I wasn't allowed to take photos....With only three shots, I decided to leave the area. This was the lucky one.

My five obstructions
(Toy camera day)

I recently saw the "The Five Obstructions" a documentary by Lars Von Trier about a filmmaking process and imposing some rules. Based on it, I decided to use my toy camera to take photographs of my five obstructions:

1. One Photo/Print in color
2. One roll of film (no more than 12 images)
3. Roll need to be taken on WTCD day
4. Film taken in one hour or less (no more than 5 minutes per photo)
5. Toy camera day theme must be part of the image

  Reflecting

After waiting for the weather to improve, I decided to have a couple of beers. When the rain stopped, I got out and took some images. Reflecting, is about being sober or drunk, about reality and fiction – about dualism – it makes you think which way is up.

Intentionally printed upside down.

La Victoria es nuestra

My favorite beer is called Victoria. The image reflects my sensation of drinking a beer.
