Interview

How did you become a designer?

I got some markers and notebook paper together when I was a kid. The guys at Joyengine in Boulder helped me out with the internship opportunity.

Where are you from originally?

All around the world.

Who were your main influences growing up?

Frank Gehry, M.C. Escher, Salvador Dali, Bob Ross, artistically. My family, otherwise.

Did you go to art school/college for design or are you self-taught?

I took some architecture classes to keep me distracted during college, other than that, self taught.

Any advice or tips to novice designers?

hen the going gets tough, that is a positive signal to keep charging. I bit that quote from Victor Wooten, who should be under the music question.

What has been the most rewarding and challenging project you have worked on?

Since March of 2006 I've been heading up a nonprofit organization called Above Grounds. This organization promotes an intangible idea of community, and to come up with original artwork and a well designed system for representing and communicating "community" was a good challenge. In some ways, though, being the person that writes the copy and knows the organization better than anyone else makes my job of communicating the message visually much easier than if I was working for someone else.

What is your favorite portfolio piece? Why?

"cubes" because it's just really simple, but the visual aspect is intriguing, I think so anyway.

What American artist inspires you most?

Jason Theilke, because I can find things in his work even after I've already looked at it for hours. Also, the guys from non-format.com, but I don't think they are American.

  Accordion portfolio
To make my portfoio tangible, I created this unfolding hand-sized peice.

  Bloc
It's the font I always wanted to use, super chunky. So, I cut some squares out of other squares.

  Casablanca
Ink on mylar. This poster shows the irony implicit in building a 'new indegenous town.'

Chautauqua
Ink on mylar. My final project for an architecture class. The poster presents a platform designed to sit on the open space outside of Boulder.

  Cubes
I never claimed to be a photographer, but this was truly a sight to behold. The red cubes were ever so slowly moving across the sky.

Flat Earth
Try to imagine thinking the earth is flat; then somebody tells you it's round. Wouldn't that blow your mind? I wonder what's next.

  joyengine logos
During my internship at joyengine, I had plenty of time to hone my ability to create unused logos. A shout out to the guys at joyengine for giving me a start.

Zew logos
Shameless plug here: Zew Design is where you can get a peice. Web and graphic design. Oh, I did these logos, a couple are in use.
