Specialty?
I don't really have a specialty. I enjoy designing book jackets and book interiors...
Dream Project
I think you have to be careful with this one. What starts out as a dream project may not end up still being your dream project. I would love to experiment with more package design.

Interview

How did you become a designer/artist?

Through a lot of sleepless nights fueled by greasy food and the determination to be a great designer.

Where are you from originally?

Hicksville, Long Island.

Who were your main influences growing up?

My parents always encouraged me to do what made me happy, even when it meant that college would turn into five years instead of four!

Did you go to art school/college for design or are you self-taught?

I went to to the University of Delaware. And thankfully they had a great design program just waiting for me to find after my foibles as a biology major.

Any advice or tips to novice designers?

– Exude confidence, but don't be arrogant.
– Ask a lot of questions.
– Keep a list of all the crazy things clients tell you; I am convinced it will make a great book.

What has been the most rewarding and challenging project you have worked on?

I think the most rewarding project was a box set I did for BMG. It chronicled the history of black music. I was so lucky to be able to use a lot of special papers and processes. It gave me a trip to the Grammys. I'd have to say it was probably one of the most challenging projects as well. I had to learn a lot, quickly.

What is your favorite design piece? Why?

I don't think I have a favorite piece. I will say that a lot of the times I like the original comps more than the final piece that gets produced.

What American artist inspires you most?

There are too many to list but I always find myself going back to Walker Evans.

What unlocks your creativity?

Relaxation. It's not your typical answer, but I find that when I am struggling with a project or idea it's better for me to take a break. Go to a movie, read a book, take a nap. When my mind has a chance to take it all in, and process everything on its own time, I come up with some of the best ideas.
