The official state flag of Mississippi
was adopted in 1894, replacing the older Magnolia
Flag (which had been adopted in 1861, after Mississippi
seceded from the union).
Today's Mississippi state flag has a small Confederate
Battle Flag in the upper left corner (it is called
the "union square"). The thirteen white stars
on the Greek Cross represent the original States
of the Union.

Magnolia or Evergreen Magnolia (1952)
Mississippi was the 20th state in the USA; it
was admitted in 1817.
